Dec 2009 – SCRG XMAS Shoot.
The last Kokoda Track Memorial Shield shoot.
Annual Championships (final)
This December (final 2009) shoot was changed at the last minute, from an IMC to a VMC. All shooting was restricted to 200m, due to the Australian Open Golf Championships being held at the NSW Golf Club almost next door to the ANZAC range. The day was almost perfect weather, and the day ran very well consider the complexity of the new range use and bi-operation arrangements. We are obviously successfully building the new arrangements into our program and procedures for complete transparency to the shooters on the day, allowing us to get on with the job of shooting…what we should be doing, and doing well.
The Vintage Match Course (VMC) was well run, with an extra 200 sitting string to make up the proposed 50 shot day. The winners for this match were:
| Spec 1 | Spec 2 | Spec 3 | Spec 5 | |
| Champion | Kevin Gill | Dick Bennett | Matt Avard | Mark Guest |
| Runner Up | Kim Ellis | Craig Mahoney | David Waters | Brad Avard |
| 3rd | Andrew Radford | Rick Gleeson | John Fabian | Thomas Smith |
At the close of the VMC, while our HUGE BBQ feast (Steaks, beef and chicken sausages, lamb kebabs, the list goes on) was being prepared, we shot the old Silverdale Clay Knockout match, for fun.
The optical shooters shot first, and placed as
follows:
1st Brad
Avard
2nd Mark Guest
3rd Bill Vlachos
Iron sights shot next, and after 2 relays of
shooting offs, the final string placed shooters as follows:
1st Matt Avard
2nd Graham Smith
3rd John Fabian
Other finalist special mention to our young female shooter Toni-Ann.
After range packup, we headed to the clubhouse for our Xmas BBQ, and annual presentation. We had a prize table packed with lots of goodies, which were awarded to the annual championships winners by spec, then filtered down to the place getters. People had to be present to claim a prize (those that support, win).
Special thanks to John Waters, for organising the BBQ and meat, doing the cooking, and the generous donation of around $80 of ammo boxes, etc for the prize table. Also special thanks to Graham Smith who donated other merchandise for the prize table, along with David Waters who put up some shirts and sweaters he brought back from Camp Perry last year.
Great thanks to all who continue to pitch in and help the SCRG when needed, Richard Ruppas and Roger Gleeson (who also helped with the days scoring), Craig Mahoney for his drink supplies, ute use, RO duties, etc, Edwyn and Eddy for their great job of catering the coleslaw, mega cheap bread rolls, Ian Bertenshaw for helping with catering, trailer towing, repairs, setup and packup, Dick Bennett (eagle eye) for always helping and being early, Al, Norm, Norm, all the supporters of the meets, the list goes on...
Finally, 2 of the biggest thanks of all. Firstly to Matt Avard, who regularly drives the furthest of most shooters and continues to help out tirelessly at every meet, is absolutely committed to making these meets possible and run as well as they can. Last, and certainly not lease, the very person who helped to allow our meets to happen in the first place, and who continues to fight for the meets to remain a fixture on the SSAA calendar, at his own expense of wits, time and courage, is the tireless Peter Cuddy (hats off to Peter – who will have the first Honour Shield shoot in his name).
