Match Report

Perfect winter weather resulted in 50 entries for the SSAA Sydney Branch Grand Prix Festival, with some 34 shooters using standard service rifles. This event was open to all licensed shooters with any magazine fed centrefire rifle. The event offered several rifle classes including  Spec 1 – Standard “As issued” Service Rifle; Spec 2 – Modified Service/Iron sights; Spec 3 Match Rifle and Spec 5 – Optical Rifle. Additional classes included Spec 1a – Commonwealth Issue Service Rifle, and Spec 5a – Optical Sporter/Hunter class rifles. The matches started early with the range set up, briefing completed and shots downrange before 9am.

The first match of the day was the 300 Metre slow fire application match. Some excellent scores were achieved in this match. Matt Avard recorded a fantastic score of 50.08 with a Tikka (yes it’s a Tikka!) converted match rifle. Mark Guest showed what you can do with a Spec 5a Sporter/Hunter class rifle with a score of 50.07. Edwyn Suyachmar won the Spec 5 class with an excellent score of 50.05. Peter Brown & Craig Mahoney battled it out with their “Swedes” to share the podium with a tied score of 50.03 in Spec 1 class. Peter Brown took honours on count back to win the match. It just goes to show that a 100 year old Swede can still keep pace with today’s modern rifles.

Match 2 & 3 aggregate scores were the sanctioned matches for the NSW MSD Grand Prix Series for standard issue service rifles. Match 2 was the discipline’s 3 Position Core Event and match 3 was the Rapid Fire B “Barrel Burner” as it’s affectionately called. MSD graded winners of match 2 &3 were GM grade Craig Mahoney, Master grade Frank Gasparini, A grade Kevin Gill, B Grade Kim Ellis and C grade Mitchell Paterson (Jnr).

Matthew McPherson, the youngest Grand Master in the discipline, was hot on the heels of some very experienced shooters all day finishing 3rd in GM grade and 3rd outright in the days Top Guns for Spec 1. Matt also took out the “Tactical Match” with a fantastic score of 200.09, by one centre to Peter Brown with 200.08. Matt is soon off to join the Army (Special Forces) and we wish him well in his ventures.

Another notable performance was from young Mitchell Paterson, a junior shooter, winning C grade, and the top junior on the day. Well done Mitchell!

The day’s aggregates resulted in Craig Mahoney winning the Spec 1 with a 298.32 out of 300 points, closely followed by Peter Brown 293.33. Matthew McPherson & Rob Irving tied on 292.34 for the bronze with Matt taking the bronze on count back. The Spec 2 aggregate winner was Rick Gleeson with a respectable 281.28.  Matt Avard finished strongly in Spec 3 with a score of 297.39. Mark Guest cleaned up in Spec 5 overall with, almost a possible score of 300.40 with an optical sporter / hunter class rifle.

With the days matches completed shooters retired to the Navy clubhouse for post match debrief, presentation and a social beer or two to top off a great day at the range. Special thanks to the many volunteers who helped out on the day, the Navy club for use of their clubhouse, and a special thanks to John Waters who arranged the hot lunch on the range for all the shooters.
