The "Greater" Sydney Flag
|
---|
The SSAA SCR shooters have many shields available to them, contested at various events throughout each year. This is a result of shields built up from the years of service shooting at the Silverdale range, the generous donations of the members and the donations by the SSAA.
Due to Silverdale heritage, the core shields have retained the name header of "Silverdale", while the other shields have evolved to our current greater Sydney objectives and have been changed to "Greater Sydney" headed trophies.

Honour Shield Jan |
Sydney Honours Shield - A shield for
our MVP's. Since the founding years of centrefire rifle shooting in Sydney, at Silverdale, then onto the ANZAC range facility, we continue to recognise the valuable people to our sport. Come 2010, we consolidated all the "named shields" into this single shield - Ray Halls, Harry Emerson, Dick Little, Mark Noonan, Roman Copot, Dick Bennet. We also have added names of other major contributors, such as past group leaders - David Waters, Craig Mahoney, Wal Vonslazgowski and Peter Cuddy.

first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces
during the First World War. Now, a day to remember all that have
fallen and served in a time of war. This shield began as an outright shield for service rifle only, but it now includes all rifle types by way of handicapping.

Sydney
Classic |
This
match began in 2003, and was the second ever sanctioned IMC event in
Sydney. It soon followed the Sydney Open IMC due to popularity of
the course of fire. Although this event is by name, it is fair to
assume that the IMC will remain an integral part of this title.

Sydney Vs Tamworth |
This inter-club challenge started after the NSW Clubs Challenge was
created by the MSD. Many clubs would visit Tamworth
during May and battle to be the champion club. The battle of Silverdale vs
Tamworth started as a side event, and is contested annually. This shield is based on "any rifle" over pre-nominated matches.

Sydney Cup July
|
The Sydney Cup is the oldest organised shoot in Sydney. It
first started in 2000 as an intra club meet. It was then sanctioned by the MSD
NSW State Chairmen when
the Grand Prix came into existence in 2003 which lead to the Sydney Cup
becoming an open event, and grow with the rich history it has today. The SC
started to included both
Rifle & Pistol, but now is only contested by Rifle. Pistol was
dropped due to the lack of shooter numbers after the complex pistol gun
law reform making pistol ownership too difficult. Although the
Rifle course of fire has had subtle changes over the years, the 3P and
Rapid Fire B strings should be in the event for a very long time to
come, if not for ever.

Sydney Open -
IMC |
International Match
Course. The Sydney IMC began in 2003. It was the
first sanctioned IMC in Sydney, even though it was nothing more than a
trial run. The numbers were very low due to very poor weather,
however the few that contested did enjoy themselves so much that the
shooters showed their commitment for it to grown. The name "Sydney
Open" was given to the meet, which set the trend for the other main
courses of fire to also have an annual open event run specially for
them.

Sydney Open-
3PRB |
3 Position & Rapid
Fire B. Sydney 3PRB Open, by title, was following on from
the IMC Open, however it was agreed that the history created in 2003
Sydney Cup should be considered its first running of this title.
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sydney Open -
TMC |
Tactical Match Course. This event has grown to be very popular. It
began as a side event, which now is an event in itself, and great
leveller of shooters and equipment.
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sydney Open -
VMC |
Vintage Match Course. First run at the 2007 Sydney Cup, it has been
considered a very good event for people to work on their positions,
techniques and equipment to help master the 200 distance. It is
easily run, easily contested and very enjoyable. We hope it will
remain part of the Sydney Cup for a long time.
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Sydney Open -
AMC |
Australian Match
Course. This course is very historical, as it is based on
a course that dates back to 1884, originating in England. It has
been very popular with many service rifle clubs, but took a while for it
to be popular in Sydney, probably due to the number of different targets
and equipment required. Thanks to AIHPA documentation and the new
equipment setup we have in Sydney, this event is easily setup for , and
is now very popular. 2008 should be the start of many titles to
come.

RETIRED SHIELDS These shields were retired at the end of 2009. By no means to forget these sport shooting founders, but due to the shields being full, reduced range time making annually contesting each shield difficult, and not allowing scope to expand for other new and future important people. These named shields are now consolidated to the "Honours Shield" or to the memorial shields. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Ray Halls
Shield This shield began as an outright shield for service rifle only, but it now includes all rifle types by way of handicapping. Retired 2009. |

Dick Bennett is like a diesel engine - he keeps going and going.
Dick has supported service rifle as long as it has been going, and has
never allowed a border or the distance to a shoot get in the way of him
making an appearance and supporting the meet. Dick is one of the
most well known and well liked people in service rifle.
This shield is now consolidated to the annual "Honours Shield".

Mark Noonan Memorial October Retired 2009. |
Mark Noonan was a key person for MSD in Sydney, who partnered Harry
Emerson with range duties, and was also involved in other service clubs.
Unfortunately Mark passed away prematuraly in October 2000, and we have
been able hold each running of this memorial shield in October.
Mark loved his scope rifles, hence his memorial shoot is a scoped rifle
event. This shield is now consolidated to the annual "Honours
Shield". This shield is based on an optical rifle event, but any rifle is welcome to contest.
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Clay Knockout |
This match started from the idea of breaking a clay pigeon with a
rifle. So a single clay is hung in the middle of a target. A
group of shooters line up, and take 1 shot. An inspection of the
clays is done to see if any hit. If not hit, then another single
shot per shooter is fired. If 2 clays are hit with same number of
shots, then those 2 shooters repeat the same course to determine a
winner. This shield is based on an optical rifle event, but any rifle is welcome to contest.

Armistice Day is the anniversary of the symbolic end of World
War I on 11 November 1918. It commemorates the armistice signed between
the Allies and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of
hostilities on the Western Front, which took effect at eleven o'clock in
the morning - the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh

Sydney Clash of Matches Retired 2009. |
This match started in 2004 after a
test run in 2003. It came about due to a reduction in range time
availability, so it was seen that it would be best to get the most out
of any range time allocations by shooting 2 matches on the same day,
instead of 1. It was proved hugely popular, because it gave all
comers the opportunity to shoot 2 courses of fire, on the same day, that
are so common yet so different in style - namely the 3P Core and the
IMC. It has been a great success and, apart from the usual late
finish, is very well liked.
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Kokoda Track Retired 2009. |
The campaign fought in the Owen Stanley Ranges
in 1942 resulted from the failure of a previous attempt by the Japanese
to capture Port Moresby. This had been a planned amphibious assault, but
was thwarted by the Battles of the Coral Sea on (5-8th May 1942) and
Midway (4-6th June 1942).
This is now honoured as part of
the ANZAC Day Memorial and Remembrance Day Memorial.
