Friday, the beginning of the NSW State Matches, was a great day, and a perfect lead-up to a great weekend - one of the best NSW State Matches ever. At the surprise to organises, there was a very good roll-up of shooters for what is normally a working day. Brilliant!
The Friday weather was sensational, and so was the range condition. We knew we were in for a sensational weekend of rifle matches.
The event started with the Vintage Match Course Friday morning. Many brought their Spec 1 rifles out of the closet, and burnt a heap of powder. Many of the typical match rifle shooters also brought vintage rifles, and proved that they can still produce brilliant (almost possible) scores. Some, on the other hand, brought rifles that, well, don't really shoot well at all, but enjoyed the theme of the match. The vintage match at the State and National matches is not for Spec 1 rifles only, but that didn't stop some shooters using the rifle of their choice in the match, for fun. A new vintage national record was shot by Peter Barnier, with a 384/400 - as sensational effort.
Following the VMC was the IMC, shot over Friday and Saturday, where the big guns fired on all cylinders and shot some sensational results. The most refreshing results came from those who went to the match on a mission - to shoot a Personal Best. Due to the efforts of those shooters, many achieved their "Expert" qualification rocker patch and rating. Well done to all. Again, records tumbled, and many were equalled, especially, and well deserved, by Matt Avard who was on fire all weekend.
Sunday saw the contesting of the Australian Service Match Course, after 1 minute silence in memory of the late Wal Cameron, and the up coming ANZAC Day memorial. The weather this day, though not as gentle as the previous 2 days, the competition was howling, with more possibles shot this day than during this course at any other event.
A very special thanks to the Gilgandra Rifle Club, and SSAA Gilgandra, for the sensational effort of maintaining the range, and the word done since our last visit there. Also, a extra special thanks to all the volunteers (to many to recall), but special thank to David Waters, Matt Avard and especially Ian Bertenshaw for hauling much of the equipment to the Gilgandra range, and back home again.
Lets hope for this moment to remain for the future events, and hope you all will return to our matches, for the up coming National Matches at Tamworth.
