Fun in the freezing cold...

Those who missed out on Gilgandra did just that - miss out.  They missed out on a fun weekend away doing all the things shooters love to do - ALL the things.

For those who went, although very happy with the weekend, we were all glad when the last shot was fired to get rugged up from the bitter cold.  This weekend of shooting was the coldest we have ever experienced (freezing), and the wind didn't help.  We had good warm accommodation, hot showers, hot food and warm beds.  BUT, and this is the most important thing - IT DID NOT RAIN!  The reality is, that if the temps were up in the late teens to early 20s, the weather would have been considered perfect.  So, Gilgandra has broken the hoodoo, and hopefully, the November shoot, the Cooee Cup, in warmer weather will attract the 30 + shooters of old than the poor turnout of 14 we had this weekend.

We visit Gilgandra twice per year - first half and second half of the year.  The 2nd shoot, the Cooee Cup, will be fixed for the 1st weekend in Nov (running on the 2nd weekend will clash with those who wish to celebrate Armistice Day commitments elsewhere).  The NSW titles should be something every single NSW shooter should be aiming to attend, and contest.  But the taboo of Gilgandra rain-outs over the last 5 meets, along with the expected extreme cold weather kept shooters away.  So next year,  the first half of the year shoot will be fixed in a slightly warmer month, but spaced out to hopefully not clash with what is typically a busy part of the calendar.

Gilgandra is a fantastic place to hold meets - so central to most all places and the facilities we have access to make it a very very comfortable and cheap weekend away.  We have see the work done on the range in the last year - mounds extended and reshaped, Neilsen target carriers expanded from 3 to 4 (from 6 to 8 targets), etc.  But Gil aren't resting there.  Gil have plans to expand the range further, build a club house and install a new amenities block.  We hope to continue our fantastic relationship with Gilgandra, and for all shooters to support this country clubs growth - to benefit all shooters.

Service Rifle - International Match Course
The cold weather did not dilute the competition with some sensational scores shot.  Craig Mahoney with his standard rifle shot a 89% in the IMC, the longs seen in this category for a long time.  David Waters was heading for a 489 in the IMC until he completely missed the target, and he knew it, blowing his score to finish with a 479.  But David doubled up the next day with the same rifle and shot a sensational 95 standing in the wind, but after a disastrous 300m rapid he only finished with a 482.  David was very keen to do well at this meet to top his personal best scores in Australia with ambitions of peaking at the right time - days before Flying out to Camp Perry for the National Matches.  Wal Cameron, who was instrumental in the creation of Spec 1A, for Commonwealth military rifles, cleaned the pool by winning the aggregate of all the matches for 1A.  Well done Wal - who also top gunned Spec 2.

Service Rifle - Australian Match Course
Some shooters were really looking forward to this course, as it was shot on the traditional black and orange targets.  These targets are very unforgiving, and are very difficult to see.  Shooters either love the targets or hate them.  The hard to see targets coupled with the skills needed to shoot at them over the course of fire really scrambles the scores.

Craig Mahoney again, an advocate for the targets, shot exceptionally well with his standard Swede.  Grant Bayley "went to town" with his "Green Machine" and put together some very impressive results (all that RANRRC Saturday shooting paying off).  David Waters cleaned the whole course with possibles shot in all strings to finish with 250/250.

Tactical Rifle Match Course
This is a course that is becoming more and more popular.  Question were asked why the course is the way it is prior to shooting, but after you shoot it, your questions are answered.  It is not a practical course, but one that requires shooters to know their equipment, read the conditions, be patient, prepared and ready to shoot when the targets appear.

Simon Ross, with his very well groomed Remington tactical rifle, won the tactical championships with a 188 at 400 on the tight SR target in what were very difficult conditions.
